| SHirin NYC From the blank canvas of the "classic white tee", designer Shirin Roubeni introduces a limited-edition collection of tops that transforms common to couture. Hand-dyed, hand-stitched, and hand-silk-screened, no two pieces are ever identical. The Shirin philosophy permeates a world even beyond fine craftsmanship, style and design, where each piece embodies the essence of true art: consistently unique, sweetly savage and instinctively desired by only the most discerning eye.
Traditionally trained in silk screening and etching, Shirin transfers the precision required for these art forms onto her tops by elaborately constructing every detail. Each stitch and every material used is individually handcrafted and carefully placed. The multiple layers of printing, the diversity of fabrics incorporated into her tops, and the intricate, yet haphazard, stitching transcend the meaning of the collection; something pretty, yet edgy.
According to the Shirin philosophy, "clothing is a representation of one's character and is meant to accentuate one's individuality." The pieces express Shirin's mantra by having a unique aura which is reflected differently in each of them. The vibrant colors and pure designs are what make the collection stand out and what make people feel special wearing it. The individual is left to decide which piece best fits her own personality.
An artist from as early as she can remember, Shirin was born in Iran, grew up in Germany and moved to the U.S. at age fourteen to pursue her talents. She went on to study at the Parsons School of Design in 1990, where she specialized in illustration and later, at the Royal College of Art in London, explored the world of printed textiles. Along with creating clothing, Shirin's love has been painting murals on walls of people's homes (now a hobby which she manages to entertain on her seemingly dwindling spare time). Painting has inspired Shirin to translate art onto fabric, while transforming fabric into art.
Little does this sweetly savage designer know she is not just transforming fabric; she has made the mundane stylized and turned the ordinary fashion forward.
