This light, colorful model is a clean and simple representation of the order of the planets in our solar system, a teaching tool, and a pleasure to behold.
Designed by Malcolm Brook, and handmade in Germany by a wooden toy company, Astrolabium has an unmistakable low tech retrospective feel to it that harkens to the days when models and miniatures were prized, and when Modernism represented a hopeful outlook. The sun and large planets are painted wood, the small ones are beads are fixed to stainless steel swing arms lined up to the sun’s vertical axis. Hang the mobile version or place the footed version of the Astrolabium near a light source, and the play of shadows is not only visually interesting, but can help to illustrate the great deductions made by Galileo. Copernicus, and others over 400 yrs ago.
